Bio

Derrick Whittington II is in his first season as Defensive Coordinator and Recruiting Coordinator at Buckhorn High School in 2025.

In 2025, Buckhorn's defense allowed 18.08 points per game (16.6 PPG during the regular season), finished 10th in Class 6A in scoring defense, and posted the program’s lowest points-allowed average since 2006. The Bucks forced 20 turnovers (16 interceptions, 4 fumble recoveries), recorded 19 sacks and 55 tackles for loss, and pitched two shutouts — the first time Buckhorn had done so in a season since 1997. The team finished 7-4, its most wins in 18 years.

Whittington spent the 2024 season at Clay-Chalkville, coaching Cornerbacks and serving as Recruiting Coordinator. The cornerback group produced three interceptions (a three-pick improvement from the previous year). The Cougars ranked second in Class 6A by allowing 11.8 points per game, and he assisted eight student-athletes in earning college scholarships.

From 2022-23 he was at Bob Jones (Class 7A), where he coached Cornerbacks, worked with the freshman and JV teams, and served as Recruiting Coordinator, helping 14 players sign at the next level. The cornerback group combined for eight interceptions (six in 2023 alone).

Whittington began coaching in 2018 at Madison County, his alma mater. Over four years he worked with the youth program, served as middle school Offensive Coordinator and Assistant Head Coach, and contributed as an Offensive and Defensive Analyst in the press box. In 2019 the Tigers won a region championship and reached the state quarterfinals, the program’s deepest playoff run since 2014. In 2021 he was able to serve as a varsity Wide Receivers and Defensive Backs coach at the conclusion of the 2021 middle school season.
